wisdom from unexpected places

Today while I have been working on my dissertation I ran across a quotation from Agatha Christie in regards to her style as a writer, and it struck me as being profoundly true about life beyond the situation in which she was using it.
'If I could write like Elizabeth Bowen, Muriel Spark, or Graham Greene, I should jump to high heaven with delight, but I know that I can't, and it would never occur to me to attempt to copy them. I have learned that I am me, that I can do the things that, as one might put it, me can do, but I cannot do the things that me would like to do.'
- Agatha Christie

Oh the truth in that! It's fantastic! Although Christie is speaking specifically about her style as a writer, this speaks to our human desire to not only compare ourselves to others, but to compare others to others and the danger in doing that. We have all been created to be us. I may want to emulate Agatha Christie's writing style, but I am Janelle, and I am not Christie. Aside from simply writing styles, in my day to day life, I need to remember that I was not made to be anyone else but myself; in remembering that I can have a greater peace and a greater impact when I am being the Janelle that God made me to be, and not trying to be Christie or one of my friends. Anyway, random thoughts for you on this Thursday.

Allons-y!
